Wash area where ointment/cream is to be applied. Rinse, then dry area.	To clean the skin

Remove the cap/lid from the tube/jar and place upside down on a clean, dry surface.	To maintain cleanliness as per standard precautions.
Check the label for correct client name and medication/number.	To ensure correct medication is given to the correct site.
Remove ointment/cream from the tube or jar with an applicator. Do not re-dip applicator in the jar.	To avoid cross contamination
Apply cream to appropriate site with gloved hand	To prevent contamination of the jar
Recap the jar. Wipe any excess ointment from around cap/lid with a tissue	To maintain cleanliness as per standard precautions.
