Applying Compression Stockings
| Procedure | Rationale |
|---|---|
| Remove your rings and jewelry. | To prevent skin damage to client and to prevent cross infection. |
| Wash hands. | To maintain cleanliness as per standard precautions. |
| Gather supplies and assemble on a clean, dry surface. | To complete a task in an organized manner. |
| If needed, wash client’s feet and lower legs. Dry well. Pay special attention to drying skin between toes. | To ensure skin is clean and dry and to promote circulation. |
| Turn the stocking inside out and hold on to the heel. | To keep track of front and rear of stocking |
| Place stocking over foot to ankle, stretching sideways. | To ensure you do not scratch the skin. |
| Apply gloves with bumps on fingers. | To ensure you can 'walk' the stocking up the leg without scratching the client. |
| Walk glove up the leg, removing wrinkles as you go. | To prevent pressure areas on the skin. |
| End about 1–2 inches below the knee. Do not encircle the leg, but point fingers upward toward the groin area. | To ensure there is sufficient space below the knee for comfort during bending. |
| Repeat the procedure for the opposite leg. | To ensure safety maintained. Do not apply stockings if open areas apparent on the legs. Notify nurse. |
| Document as needed. | To ensure that continuity of care is maintained. |
